Othello by William Shakespeare November 13-29, 2008, at the McCord Museum.

Shakespeare's great masterpiece features a cast of nine and a design team of four in this production, directed by Gabrielle Soskin, artistic director of Persephone Productions.

Othello, a noble moor, a military hero, is caught in a terrifying web of self destruction in Shakespeare's gripping masterpiece. The play is full of disturbing and conflicting emotions: love and hate, jealousy and ambition, sexual desire and individual integrity, as the characters struggle against the forces that overpower them.

This timeless tragedy also shows the tremendous power of words to manipulate and to persuade, and reveals our own vulnerability against the force of evil that is everywhere in the world today.

Using minimalist set pieces with simple costumes that reflect a contemporary and Renaissance look, the production will focus on bringing clarity to the text, physically and verbally so that this universal story will continue to captivate audiences.
