Recently named to the Order of Canada, acclaimed author Nancy Huston wrote the English stage adaptation Prodigy based on Gabriel Garran's original French dramatization of the novella especially for Persephone Productions.
Prodigy weaves the tale of three generations of a family of women who are further united through their talent as pianists, a passion for each other,and for the music they play.
This deeply touching and sensitive play addresses the profound conflict between the journey of Motherhood and the burning need to express creativity in other ways.
Prodigy
Nancy Huston (born September 16, 1953) is a Canadian-born author who writes primarily in French.Nancy Huston was born in Calgary, Alberta. She is the author of seven novels and numerous works of non-fiction, published both in Canada and her adopted home of France. Her previous books have won the Prix Goncourt des Lyceen, the Prix du Livre-Inter, the Prix Elle, and the Governor General's Award for Fiction in French. The Mark of the Angel, a bestseller in France and Canada, was shortlisted for the 1999 Giller Prize, and won the Grand Prix des Lectrices de Elle and the 1999 Jewish Book Award. She lives in Paris with her husband and two children.
Prodigy was orginally published as a novella in English and French in 2000. Renowned French director and actor Gabriel Garran adapted it for the stage in 2002 and it was performed in Paris at the Theatre International de la Langue Francaise. Ms.Huston translated that version into English for Persephone Productions. Nancy Huston was made an officer of the Order of Canada in August 2005.
